Character History:
Yakan was born in captivity. When he was born his mother and father were being held hostage by a criminal organization in the Land of Wind. The criminals had mistaken Yakan's father for a foreign shinobi spy. They tortured and killed him. Yakan's mother was also their prisoner and she died giving birth to Yakan. The criminals were conglomerate of cons, thieves, and assassins. In a vote, they decided that they had no use for the child but should not kill him either, and so they abandoned Yakan at an orphanage in the Land of Wind that they knew well. There, Yakan was given his first name, Shikeishū (死刑囚, left for dead), and raised.
Shikeishū grew to be rather introverted in comparison to the other kids at the orphanage. He was somewhat outcast, as a result of his unusual name. There were more girls at the orphanage than boys and Shikeishū naturally got along with the girls better, becoming friends with a few of them. The only boys at the orphanage were older than Shikeishū and they'd banded together under the influence of the eldest of the boys, who made them more or less a group of thugs.
The eldest boy thought of one of the girls at the orphanage as his possession, although she, being more mature than him, mostly just ignored him. Shikeishū, of course, had become good friends with this girl. One day, when she was sad, he comforted her, and this sent the eldest boy into a rage.
The boy rallied his gang of followers and waited until Shikeishū was alone to drag him into the nurse's room at the orphanage, where they began to beat him to death. Fearing for his life, Shikeishū reacted, unleashing his kekkei genkai for the first time. Shikeishū magnetized a number of needles (senbon) in the nurse's office and slaughtered his attackers. The masters of the orphanage were terrified when they realized what had happened. They made sure none of the other children found out. They obscured all of the evidence and called the gang of criminals to return and take Shikeishū back.
Wondering if the child might be of some use to them, the criminals somewhat begrudgingly took him back. They corrupted Shikeishū, training him to grift, thieve, and assassinate for them. Knowing he had shinobi powers, the criminals brought him to the temple of the Sasorikyō, who worshipped a scorpion deity, and had him trained in their hiden ninjutsu and taijutsu. Under their tutelage, Shikeishū became a master of taijutsu and ninjutsu and created many custom techniques. When he left the temple he fully intended to return his criminal home but decided first to detour and visit the orphanage where he had grown up.
When he arrived Shikeishū found the orphanage leveled, crumbling in ruin and filled with the dry bones of his friends and those who'd raised him. He was late by some number of years. The destruction was clearly the work of the scourge of the desert, the Ichibi, Shukaku. A few of the criminals that Shikeishū lived with had occasionally tried to hunt the monstrous creature for the glory of overpowering it, but they were never successful. Shikeishu was sure it was his companions that had led the tailed beast to the orphanage, perhaps not even long after they had to come to reclaim him all those years ago.
Shikeishu returned to the group, who remained unsuspecting of what he had learned, and with his master-level skills, he slaughtered them all, enraged by their arrogance at hunting the Ichibi. After this, Shikeishu became a wanderer, abandoning his cursed name and becoming known henceforth as Yakan.
Yakan, though only a marauder, attained fame over time for having slain the band of criminals who'd been responsible for so much of his misery. Warriors from around the Land of Wind came to respect him for bringing an end to such an unjust group. As Yakan traveled, he passed through many small towns and settlements, often finding that the country was poor and the merchants all struggled to survive themselves, let alone provide for their families. Most of the local money that was made was all the income of mercenaries and spies, who were abundant throughout the land.
Yakan came to know the Land of Wind as a poor, mostly criminal country, and sought to do something about it. Holding the respect of the nation's warriors, be they just or unjust, and also holding the hopes of the struggling merchants, Yakan continued his travels, now urging all those who sought to better themselves to unite and form a much greater village.
After having rallied extensive support, Yakan put together a considerable force of honorable shinobi and banded together the merchants, forming the village of Sunagakure no Sato. With Yakan as the Shodaime Kazekage, the village was built from the ground up; fortified, organized, and prospering under him.
