In the beginning...
The world was torn by battle, where families could do nothing but seek shelter in their homes in hopes that they would be safe from the carnage that surrounded them. Peace was nothing but a myth, and for the unfortunate fathers and sons forced to defend their homelands, death was the only reality. Sickened by the constant bloodshed, a beautiful princess sought to end the constant fighting. Though it was thought to be taboo, she ate fruit of the Shinju tree and attained god-like powers. With this new gift, she would bring peace to the world and come to be revered as the Rabbit Goddess. These powers would be passed on to her sons, and over time the princess began to lose trust in the humans, slowly becoming corrupted by the power. Driven to madness, the princess decided to create her version of a perfect world by trapping her victims in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, quickly changing her public status as a Goddess to that of a Demon. Envious that her beloved powers had been passed onto her sons, the princess merged with the Shinju tree and took on the form of a monstrous Ten-Tails demon. With the gifts that they had inherited from their mother, the two sons were able to defeat the Ten-Tails, separating their mother's powerful chakra from her body. While the chakra was sealed into the eldest brother, her body was used to form what is now the moon. The eldest brother would then go on to teach this power to the world, calling it Ninshū, and earning the title of the Sage of Six Paths. In his old age, he feared that the Ten-Tails would be released upon his death, thus he separated the demon's chakra into nine separate entities and let them free into the world.
As time progressed, nations sought to rise in power and soon began attempting to capture the tailed beasts which had been created by the Sage of Six paths. These numerous attempts quickly caused the tailed beasts to despise humans, often hiding away or blatantly attacking villages. Inevitably, this lead to more conflict and eventually war as some villages had become more powerful than others. Kumogakure became the first great village due to its impressive military strength and having been the first village to successfully capture the Seven-Tailed beast. For months they struggled to gain control over the beast, and eventually sealed it away into a container for fear of having their village destroyed. Konohagakure became the second great village, the first to rise up and match Kumogakure in size, though not military strength. They too were able to capture one of the remaining eight tailed beasts, the Two-Tailed beast, though Konoha was much more successful in containing their beast. The people of Konoha, lacking in military strength, excelled in intelligence and learned that the tailed beasts could be sealed into a human host, thus creating a jinchūriki. Finally, Iwagakure came to be, matching Kumogakure in strength, but not in size. The shinobi hailing from this village boasted incredible endurance, as if they were themselves chiseled from stone. Like its rival villages, Iwagakure had successfully captured a tailed beast of their own, the Four-Tails. Like Konoha, Iwagakure had figured out a method for sealing the tailed beast within a host, creating their own jinchūriki.
With three villages of equal size and strength, the world had once again become riddled with scars of war, each village wanting to gain an advantage over the others. Traveling had become dangerous as those who weren't members of the larger villages would often ambush anyone who crossed their path. With tensions at an all time high, Konoha and Iwa had come to an agreement in which they would form an alliance against Kumo, though the leader of Iwagakure had secret plans to default on the treaty once Kumo had been destroyed.
Currently, the tailed beasts have gone into hiding. Shukaku has taken to the desert in the Land of Wind, Isobu lurks within the depths of the Land of Water, Kokuō has managed to stay hidden within the forests of the Land of Fire, Saiken inhabits the largest island located in the Land of Water, Gyūki has cleverly tucked himself away in the Land of Whirlpools and Kurama, the Nine-Tailed fox, carves a path of destruction all around the continent.
