Jino’s plan was thorough and flawless. He knew Shumi would be hunting him. He knew she would be relentless. He was grateful for the appearance of the foolish Mist ninja who intended to take on his Biju-to-be. The eight-tails – ha! It would be his before noon. Not only did this shinobi challenge the Biju but he also redirected Shumi and her annoying squadron back into the Forest. He could not have asked for more. Once the sky began to respond to Renkai and the whirlpool foretold the coming Biju, Jino decided to wound Renkai and ensure that the fight would be his in the end.
Like the leopard upon the antelope, at the perfect moment, he sprang from the water, fluidly slitting his own wrists and spraying blood across Renkai’s face. The wound would heal at a simple command from him. His kekkei genkai was unkind, but thanks to the Plate of Blood, it was no longer a concern to his personal safety. The Mist-ninja leapt backwards and the blood splattered across the sand. Jino detonated it a moment later and a small explosion rocked the clearing. He leapt through the smoke, kunai spinning, and plunged them both deeply through the shinobi’s hair into his shoulders. The tips were poisoned.
Renkai did not move and the blades of the kunai suddenly snapped off as the atmosphere quivered. Jino jerked backwards but Renkai slapped his hands firmly over Jino’s and pinned them briefly to the handles of his weapons. The genjutsu broke and the truth was revealed. The true Renkai was already fighting the Biju down the beach more than a half-mile away. The Renkai before Jino was none other than Shumi. Her appearance changed back to her own. The kunai lodged in her hair could not pierce through to her skin and Shumi leaned dangerously close to Jino’s face,
“Jino.” She stated, “Your time has come.”
Their personal battle would rage on for an hour. Jino would surprise Shumi with the knowledge that he had discovered and absorbed the Plate of Water which allowed his sneaky approach to the Biju to be a success. With the removal of her second Plate, his chakra supply would prove to be too great with two plates against her one even with her own natural supply. Sotelo Hamachi would move in to the fight to aid Shumi, seeing that their mission was going to fail. Before he could reach her, Shumi ambushed her friend and broke the plate of Essence in his protection. The chakra released was enough to perform her father’s forbidden jutsu for the second and final time. Shumi killed Jino and destroyed both of the plates he sealed.
Having completed her life’s mission and knowing her squad was safe, Shumi rested in Sotelo’s arms on the beach while her own chakra began to eat her body away. She requested to be buried with her brother beneath the sacred Magnolia tree back in Amegakure. She specifically asked Sotelo to visit her Summon, the giant hagfish, and say goodbye to him for her as they had a special friendship created long ago when she was but a Chuunin. In her final moments, Sotelo reiterated his desire to be married. Shumi handed Sotelo the precious and rare rainstone that she had taken from Namkao upon his death, and pressed it into his palm. Her answer was unintelligible from the gargling amounts of blood spilling from her mouth and lips. She would die in his arms. By the time the chakra was sated, nothing remained of her but her clothes and a single long strand of her starlight hair. Sotelo and the remainder of her squad would leave Renkai and his battle with the Biju without seeing its conclusion and depart for Amegakure. Sotelo carried Shumi the entire way.
He buried her remnants beneath the magnolia tree and hung her rainstone from its branches. The blooms of the magnolia then turned silver and continuously shed a beautiful curtain of petals in a gentle flow over the ground where the Kominishi siblings finally rested together in peace. The branches of the tree would wrap around the rainstone until it couldn’t be separated from the bark and it became a staple landmark for all of Amegakure.
Sotelo ensured the destruction of Shumi Kominishi’s father’s research and made it his personal quest to retrieve the final Plate of Heaven and destroy it. Those secrets lost forever, he prayed that the heavens would find peace in his decision. He would take on a Genin squad and pass on his own knowledge and experience for many years before dying as an old retired shinobi with no children or wife.
Amegakure would never reach the legend status that the other villages obtained and maintained over the years and generations to come. But as is true in many tales, the rain was always present, even if its effects weren’t always outwardly seen.
Amegakure was always great to those who loved it and understood what it meant to be a part of the cleansing rain.
